Our Values

At Psychodrama NJ, we recognize that no learning or healing space is value-neutral. Every environment reflects guiding principles, and we believe it is important to be transparent about the values that shape our work.

Our programs are grounded in and intentionally aligned with the ethical principles of the Social Work profession and the American Psychological Association, including:

• The dignity and worth of every person
• Self-determination
• Social justice
• Integrity and professional responsibility
• Cultural humility
• Diversity, equity, inclusion and justice

In a time when the world can feel increasingly divided, we believe it is essential that those who enter our space share a commitment to maintaining an environment rooted in safety, respect, and mutual care.

We strive to create a welcoming and affirming environment for individuals of all abilities; diverse religious and spiritual traditions; immigrant and Indigenous communities; 2SLGBTQIA+ identities; BIPOC communities; and people with a wide range of beliefs and lived experiences.

Agreement on every topic is not required. What we ask instead is a shared commitment to honoring differences while prioritizing emotional safety, care, and respectful engagement.

We are deeply grateful to all who help co-create a space where people feel seen, valued, and supported, both personally and professionally.

Our Story

Scottie Urmey’s connection to psychodrama began in 1993, while enrolled at Brookdale Community College in the Human Services and Creative Arts Therapies program. It was there that she was first introduced to psychodrama and met her mentor Nina Garcia, EdD, LCSW, TEP, who continues to play a pivotal role in shaping her development in the field. Nina’s compassionate mentorship and dedication to experiential learning deeply influenced Scottie’s path, and Scottie strives to offer the same spirit of encouragement, support, and professional guidance to the supervisees and trainees she mentors today.

Psychodrama New Jersey started taking root in 2007, when Scottie Urmey, LCSW, TEP, shared her passion for psychodrama, sociometry, and group psychotherapy during a presentation for the Monmouth University School of Social Work Honor Society. What began as a single presentation multiplied into dozens of trainings and workshops at universities, hospitals, nonprofit agencies, conferences, and professional organizations. Scottie officially founded Psychodrama New Jersey, LLC in 2012 as a training institute and psychotherapy practice. When founding Psychodrama New Jersey, Scottie’s vision was to integrate her background in creative arts therapies, psychological research, and extensive psychodrama training to create meaningful, embodied, and effective approaches to healing and learning.

In January 2015, Psychodrama NJ found a home on Monmouth Road in Oakhurst, New Jersey, where it continues to grow and expand its offerings today. Throughout the growth of Psychodrama NJ, Scottie has been fortunate to collaborate with many dedicated colleagues. Her collaboration with her dear friend and colleague Ron Collier, LCSW, TEP, was honored with the ASGPP Collaborators Award in 2016, recognizing their shared contributions to the field of psychodrama and group psychotherapy.

Today, Psychodrama NJ provides a wide range of psychotherapy services, professional trainings, workshops, supervision, and consultation for clinicians and helping professionals from many disciplines. What began as a single presentation has grown into a vibrant learning and healing community dedicated to connection, creativity, compassionate care, and the ongoing mentorship of the next generation of clinicians and group leaders.

Our Sociome"tree"

Each year, participants in Psychodrama NJ educational offerings are invited to add their fingerprint to the annual Sociome"tree".

A playful twist on sociometry, the science of social connections and choices, the tree reflects a core belief: we share more in common than we often realize.

Through learning sociometry in action, shared connections come into awareness, making it easier to hold differences with compassion and to form meaningful relationships. Each fingerprint becomes a leaf on the tree, symbolizing the shared experience of learning within a supportive professional community.

Every Sociome“tree” is unique, and together they form an ever-growing forest; representing the diversity, interconnection, and collective wisdom of the broader psychodrama and allied healing communities. A living record of connection, learning, and personal and professional growth.
