About the event

Untangling The Karpman Drama Triangle: Encircling The Space Of Transformation

In-Person Workshop: Monday, December 7th, 9:30am-5:30pm @ Psychodrama NJ in Oakhurst, NJ

The Karpman Drama Triangle offers a powerful way to understand toxic interpersonal patterns and unhealthy internal beliefs. Often operating outside of our awareness, these dynamics can create cycles of pain, blame, and shame. At times, we can all find ourselves caught in the roles of Victim, Rescuer, and Persecutor as we struggle to understand ourselves and navigate our relationships with others.

In this experiential daylong training, participants will use psychodrama and action techniques to identify and explore the behaviors and relational patterns associated with each role of the Drama Triangle.

The Circle of Restoration will then be introduced as a model for stepping out of these limiting dynamics and moving toward assertive expression, empowered action, and healthy connection. Through experiential learning and psychodramatic interventions, participants will explore ways to help clients recognize these patterns and move toward more satisfying and restorative roles in their relationships with themselves and others.

By the end of this workshop participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the behaviors associated with the three Karpman Drama Triangle roles.

  2. Identify the behaviors associated with the Circle of Restoration roles .

  3. Demonstrate at least three action techniques that can be used to assist clients in moving off of the Drama Triangle dynamics and toward more the more adaptive Circle of Restoration roles.

Inclusivity Position & Agreement

Psychodrama NJ recognizes that nothing is value-free. Every learning space reflects a set of guiding principles, and we want our participants to be clear about the values that shape our learning events. Our programs are grounded in, and intentionally aligned with, the core values and ethics of the Social Work profession and APA’s principles, including dignity and worth of every person, self-determination, social justice, integrity, cultural humility, and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

In a world that has become increasingly divisive in recent times, it is more important than ever that everyone who enters our space agrees to co-create and maintain an environment of safety, respect, and mutual care. We are dedicated to fostering a welcoming, safe, and affirming environment for all participants. We honor each person’s presence, perspectives, and willingness to engage vulnerably in meaningful learning.

We proudly welcome and affirm individuals of all religious identities and spiritual traditions (including the full spectrum of religious observance and practice) as well as LGBTQIA+ identities, BIPOC communities, neurodivergent individuals, people of all abilities, and those with diverse identities, perspectives, and lived experiences.

We expect each person’s identities and lived experiences to be afforded the same respect. We recognize that every person who enters our learning space brings multiple and intersecting identities and lived experiences, including our trainers, co-trainers, and presenters. We ask everyone to approach one another with curiosity and humility rather than assumption, recognizing that we cannot know the fullness of another person’s identity or experience simply by what we see or believe we know about them.

We believe that together, we build a culture rooted in trust, safety, transparency, and shared responsibility. By attending a Psychodrama NJ event, you are agreeing to help co-create an atmosphere of mutual respect, openness, and inclusion for everyone in the room. This means honoring one another’s identities, experiences, perspectives, practices, and boundaries, even when they differ from our own. If you have questions or concerns about your ability to participate in this way, please contact Scottie directly.
